Kayaking
Liddel Water forms part of the border between Scotland and England, featuring white-water sections ranging from Grade 2 to Grade 4.
Liddel Water Log Cabins and Farmhouse are located at Penton Bridge, providing guests with direct access to the river launch point. The primary 500-meter white-water run begins at the property and finishes at a landing point downstream on the left bank. Guests can assess the ledges and river conditions directly from the adjacent riverside path before launching.
Rock UK Whithaugh Park
Located approximately a 15-minute drive north across the border in Newcastleton, Rock UK Whithaugh Park is a 110-acre outdoor activity centre.
The facility offers pre-booked instructor-led sessions for groups, featuring water-based activities such as kayaking, canoeing, and raft building on its private water systems. Additional on-site amenities include an indoor swimming pool, climbing walls, zip wires, and mountain bike trails. All specialized equipment and safety gear are provided by the centre during scheduled sessions.
Fishing
Liddel Water contains populations of salmon, sea trout, and brown trout. The fishing season opens on April 1st, with salmon angling continuing until October 31st and trout fishing closing at the end of September. Liddel Water Log Cabins and Farmhouse sit directly on the riverbank, providing guests with immediate access to the water for angling.
Permits are required to fish this section of the river. Day and weekly tickets can be arranged through the Border Esk & Liddel Angling Club. Inquiries regarding permit availability, booking, and current pricing can be directed to the club secretary. Regulations enforce mandatory catch-and-release for salmon during the early season, and Sunday fishing is prohibited on these waters.

Walking Trails
Liddel Water Lodges provides direct access to walking paths across the estate grounds and riverbanks.
The routes trace the course of the Liddel Water, which marks the border between England and Scotland. Paths span woodland terrain and open meadows, accommodating various fitness levels. Guests can observe native wildlife, including kingfishers and roe deer, directly from the trails. Detailed route information is available from management.
Kielder Water & Forest Park
Located approximately a one-hour drive from the estate, Kielder Water & Forest Park sits within the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. The area holds a Gold-Tier classification for its low levels of light pollution, making it a recognized location for stargazing and observing the Milky Way.
The park houses the Kielder Observatory, a public astronomical facility running scheduled educational events, telescope viewing sessions, and night-sky tours throughout the year. Due to high demand, access to evening observatory events is strictly by ticket only, and advance reservations are required.
Coming Soon - Wellness Centre
A new eco-tourism and wellness destination is currently under development less than two miles from Penton Bridge at Haithwaite Farm.Spearheaded by Netherby Hall Ltd, the project transforms a traditional farmstead into a sustainable visitor hub.
The approved plans for the site feature a dedicated wellness centre and spa, alongside a farm shop, café, and taphouse bar. The development focuses on rural regeneration and environmental sustainability, utilizing ground-source heating and solar power.
Haithwaite Farm
Netherby Hall
Located a short drive from Liddel Water, Netherby Hall is a Grade II* listed historic mansion situated on a 36-acre country estate. The property features a restored Victorian stable yard and an expansive working walled garden that supplies seasonal produce to the nearby Pentonbridge Inn.
While the private house and grounds are closed to the public for daily walk-ins, the estate hosts scheduled public events throughout the year, including seasonal craft fairs, open garden days, and the annual Netherby Hall Car Show.
Hadrian's Wall
Located approximately a 30-minute drive south of the estate, Hadrian’s Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning the north of England. Constructed by the Roman Empire in AD 122, the stone fortification features remaining ruins of forts, milecastles, and barracks across the Cumbrian landscape.
Visitors can access nearby preserved sections, such as Birdoswald Roman Fort, which features interactive museum displays, a visitor centre, and direct access to walking trails along the longest continuous stretch of the wall.
